On March 24 a 54-year-old man intervened to save his elderly mother by shooting an alleged intruder who was climbing through the apartment window.
The incident occurred on Chicago’s South Shore around 4 a.m.
According to ABC 7, eighty-eight-year-old Bertha Tate was asleep when she heard a gun shot. She awoke to find that her 54-year-old son Anthony had shot a man whom he allegedly spotted coming through the window.
Anthony keeps a revolver in his chair, and he says he used it once he saw “the man’s arm come through the window.” The 36-year-old suspect fled but was quickly found by police, who followed a blood trail. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was “expected to be okay.”
Ironically, Bertha’s husband was shot and killed by home invaders in 1962. She says she developed the habit of sleeping with a gun within reach to prevent such a thing from happening to her. Bertha said she is happy to see her son has the same habit.
She said, “My son said he wasn’t going to let that somebody come in that window. He knew those boys came in the house and killed his father. He wasn’t going to let somebody come in the house and kill me.”
