Gov. John Kasich won his home state’s primary, giving him a foundation to compete against Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.

Fox News called the primary for Kasich just before 9PM eastern time.

GOP frontrunner Donald Trump came in second to Kasich in Ohio, but the other two remaining candidates, Cruz and Rubio, were in a very distant third and fourth place. As primary day started in Ohio, Marco Rubio was still in the race, but as polls closed, the Floridian announced he was suspending his campaign for the GOP nomination.

Trump did well in eastern Ohio, but mirroring Mitt Romney’s support in the Buckeye State, Kasich did better in the suburban areas of the state. According to David Wasserman, Kasich outpaced Romney in northern and western Ohio.
