The cast of Comedy Central’s Broad City explained that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s upcoming cameo on the show is not a political statement on Saturday during a panel at the South by Southwest Festival festival in Austin, Texas.
It was first announced that Clinton would guest star in an episode of the show’s upcoming third season back in December.
The former Secretary of State broke the news by sharing an image of herself on the set with co-stars and producers Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, and executive producer Amy Poehler.
With Clinton facing unexpected opposition form Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democrat primary, an audience member asked Glazer and Jacobson if they were attempting to make a political statement by inviting Clinton to appear on the show instead of Sanders.
“We were not trying to make a statement, to be honest,” said Abbi Jacobson, according to Entertainment Weekly. “We wrote season 3 a year ago, at this point. That’s not our show really: Let’s make a political stance here. It was really more that this is something Ilana’s character would do.”
Jacobson continued: “Hillary, even regardless of where we stand – and we love Hillary – is such an iconic figure … These girls being around her is not an everyday thing.”
Ilana Glazer Added: “Because she’s this icon, we’re trying to make really good TV. I think you’ll watch the episode and think it’s a great episode of TV.”
Jacobson previously told EW that the Hillary episode was not written specifically for a Clinton cameo.
“We were writing this very specific episode, and we actually wrote it where she didn’t even need to be in it,” she told the outlet. “And then it was really crazy that she was into it, and so it became even more heightened when she was actually a part of it,” she added.
In the same interview, Glazer described Clinton as “warm and personable,” adding: “It was just such an unbelievable honor to meet her.”
The Clinton episode will air this Wednesday on Comedy Central.
