Prosecutors have leveled a first-degree murder charge against a Chicago man for the 2015 murder of a nine-year-old boy, allegedly killed because of hatred toward his father’s street gang.
Chicago police reported this week that 22-year-old Dwight Boone-Doty was charged with the murder of the boy.
As initially reported in November of last year, little Tyshawn Lee was playing basketball at a park next to his grandmother’s home when a group of people began having an argument nearby. The child had joined the group at some point, but it was unknown if he knew any of them. As the argument grew, someone pulled a gun and fired several shots, at least two of which struck the child, one in the head.
But it was later discovered that the shooting of the boy was no accident. Investigators soon revealed the boy was lured away from the basketball court and into an alley where he was purposely shot. Police ultimately said Lee was targeted because his father is a gang member.
In a tweet about the charges, Chicago spokesman Anthony Guglielmi called Boone-Doty an “executioner.”
This is the fist time the Chicago police have said they found the triggerman in the death of the boy. Another man was arrested for the shooting at the end of November, but police never said he was the actual shooter.
Police spokesman Guglielmi further noted that Boone-Doty was also being charged both with first-degree murder as well as attempted first-degree murder in a separate incident from last year.
