This week, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom re-released a video on Facebook challenging Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall along the entire U.S.-Mexico border. The video, posted on Facebook, has been seen almost nine million times.
Newsom spokesman Dan Newman emailed the Sacramento Bee, “Everyone is coming to terms with the … reality that it’s not a dream or a nightmare. Donald J. Trump is actually the presumptive GOP nominee to be the leader of the free world.”
The animated video features the following narration:
Donald Trump will be paying us a visit. It’s a perfect time to show you the truth behind his immigration ideas and how they will hurt all of us.
Trump says that he would build a wall along the entire 1,900 mile Mexican border, but that won’t work because of rivers, mountains, tribal lands, private land and countless other challenges. Trump says that his wall will stop undocumented immigrants from trying to come to our country, but a wall won’t secure our border or keep people safe. Trump says that he’ll round up and deport 11 million men, women, and children; he even wants to tear up Abe Lincoln’s equal protection clause in the United States Constitution. A conservative think tank (The American Action Forum) says that deporting that many people would cost over 400 billion dollars. So what would Mr. Make America Great Again’s scheme do to our economy?
Well, we’d lose half of our farm workers and six percent of America’s workforce. Trump’s plan would send our economy into a downturn worse than the Great Recession and cost our economy more than 1.6 trillion dollars.
The animation stops as Newsom himself appears on screen, asserting, “Trump’s plan would be a disaster, and Donald, I’ll debate that plan any time, anywhere.”
The video was initially released last September. Newsom had received a $2,500 donation from Trump for Newsom’s 2010 campaign for lieutenant governor, but gave the money to organizations that aid immigrants.
