On February 22, 71-year-old Tony Pitts fired three rounds at an alleged home intruder, striking the suspect twice in the chest.
Pitts is a disabled gentleman who lives in Hickory, North Carolina.
According to WSOC TV, Pitts was in bed watching television when someone knocked on his door during the night. Pitts did not answer because of the late hour. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes later, “he heard the sound of shattered glass.”
Pitts said, “I’m disabled and somebody kicks the door in, I got to do something.” He pointed to the where he and the alleged intruder locked eyes, saying, “I seen him coming in the door and standing over there and I shot him somewhere right here.”
He fired three rounds, two of which hit the suspect in the chest and the third of which lodged in the door frame. Pitts said he did not want to shoot, but the intruder gave him no choice. “If I hadn’t shot him, he might have shot me. I don’t know.”
The next day, police arrested 36-year-old Brian Eckard and “charged him with first-degree burglary.”
