GOP frontrunner Donald Trump won the Georgia primary on Super Tuesday.
Fox News called the race for Trump just after 7 p.m. EST, predicting the real estate mogul will have a “comfortable win” over Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Georgia has a total of 76 delegates to the GOP convention.
Rubio and Cruz are battling for second place.
According to exit polls, 50 percent of Republicans polled in Georgia, Virginia, and Massachusetts said they wanted an outsider.
“That would appear a positive sign for a candidate like Trump,” reported Fox News. “But in Georgia, 46 percent said they’d be dissatisfied if he were the nominee; in Virginia, that number was 52 percent.”
On the Democrat side, Fox News projected Hillary Clinton will win Georgia over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
On Super Tuesday, a total of 595 delegates from 12 states are up for grabs among the Republican candidates.
Politico reports:
Trump’s early victory in the South on Tuesday was particularly bad news for Cruz, who has called Super Tuesday “the single most important day in the entire Republican primary.” A slate of southern states voted on Tuesday, led by Cruz’s home state of Texas, each with significant conservative and evangelical Christian populations that were supposed to be Cruz’s bulwark.
Cruz won a plurality of very conservative voters in Georgia, according to exit polls, but Trump carried somewhat conservative and moderate voters by wide margins, more than enough to lift him to victory.
