Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) appeared to relish naming Sen. Rubio (R-FL) as a fellow member of the Gang of Eight, the group behind the 2013 attempt at immigration reform and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
“Let’s pass comprehensive immigration reform,” Schumer urged Thursday at a Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest examining the impact of high-skilled guest worker programs.
“The bill — the Gang of Eight and I’ll name the people: Sen. [Dick] Durbin (D-IL), Sen. [Bob] Melendez (D-NJ), [Sen. Michael] Bennett (D-CO), and myself on the Democratic side. Sen. [John] McCain (R-AZ), Sen. (Jeff) Flake (R-AZ), Sen. [Lindsey] Graham (R-SC), and Sen. Rubio— on the Democratic – on the Republican side” Schumer said, emphasizing “Rubio.”
“I had fun doing that,” he continued. “Worked to pass this legislation.”
Rubio is running for president seeking the Republican nomination. His support and work on behalf of the Gang of Eight bill has been a stumbling block for the presidential hopeful as he tries to win over Republican primary voters.
The Gang of Eight’s 2013 comprehensive immigration reform bill passed in the Senate but died in the House.
