Obama Claims His Gun Controls Would Have Prevented Kalamazoo Shooter from Getting Gun

President Barack Obama claimed Feb. 22 that his executive gun controls will prevent people like alleged Kalamazoo gunman Jason Brian Dalton from getting guns.

In comments made at the National Governors Association Reception, Obama cited the Kalamazoo gunman, saying, “Earlier this year, I took some steps that will make it harder for dangerous people, like this individual, to buy a gun.”

But on February 23 — the very day after Obama made this claim — law enforcement officials in Kalamazoo announced that Dalton’s gun was properly “registered” and “legally” owned. And this was in addition to previous reports that Dalton has no criminal history and no history of mental illness.

What this means is that Obama’s executive  gun controls — focused largely on an incremental expansion of background checks — would not have stopped Dalton from acquiring his gun .

It was the same in other recent attacks. Expanded background-checks in California did not stop Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik from acquiring the guns they used in the Dec. 2 San Bernardino shooting, nor stop Elliot Rodger from acquiring the pistol he used to carry out his May 2014 attack in Santa Barbara.

Colorado also has expanded background checks, yet we saw two of our nation’s highest-profile shootings occur in that state last year — the random shooting deaths of three innocents in Colorado Springs by Noah Harpman on Halloween Day and the shooting deaths of two civilians and one police officer by Robert Lewis Dear at a Planned Parenthood on November 27.

CBS News reported that Harpman acquired his guns “legally” — which means Obama’s gun controls would not have stopped him either — but law enforcement has been tight-lipped regarding how Dear acquired his gun.

Only one thing is certain at this point, expanded background checks did not do anything to prevent Dear from having a gun on November 27, 2015.
