Kevin Spacey on Presidential Race: ‘We Get What We Deserve’

During Monday’s “House of Cards” premiere at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, actor Kevin Spacey said little of the comparisons between his hit Netflix series and the current presidential race but did say that U.S. politics is “becoming a little bit more predictable” than what’s depicted on screen.

Spacey plays President Frank Underwood, who is running for re-election in the fictional show. When asked which White House run he thought was more surprising, Frank Underwood’s or the current 2016 presidential race — the 56-year-old said, “It’s sort of silly to compare the two.”

“They’re both a little bit unpredictable in that audiences have no idea where we’re gonna go and what we’re gonna do, and I think that’s part of the enjoyment that an audience has. They don’t really know,” he said.

“And in the real world? I mean now it’s becoming a little bit more predictable,” Spacey added. “At the same time, I happen to believe that we get what we deserve.”

Spacey, who has praised Obama’s “historic” presidency “despite constant knee-jerk opposition from the Republicans,” was in Washington to see the unveiling of a portrait by British artist Jonathan Yeo of Frank Underwood.
