Billionaire Donald Trump hit his third win in a row in Nevada on Tuesday evening—a big win, as the election results were called the minute caucuses closed.
Trump’s big win in Nevada comes on the heels of victories in New Hampshire’s and South Carolina’s GOP primaries—and after a strong second place finish in the Iowa caucuses. Trump’s win puts him in prime position heading into the CNN debate in Houston on Thursday and Super Tuesday a week from today.
Time in running out for the Washington establishment to push Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) into a competitive position to fight with Trump from that side of the party. Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is running into roadblocks as time also runs out for his challenge to Trump. Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Dr. Ben Carson are hanging in there.
Trump’s win comes as entrance polls show an enraged electorate in Nevada that is furious with failures of the federal government—and overwhelming majorities seeking a political outsider as their next president.
Trump’s win also proves he can win not just in primaries but also in caucuses, making his momentum even more formidable as the 2016 GOP presidential nominating process moves forward.
The only candidate who has beat Trump so far is Cruz, in Iowa’s caucuses, and it’s unclear if any of the other remaining candidates–Rubio, Kasich, and Carson–could beat Trump anywhere.
