At the White House, President Obama lectured America’s governors about the dangers of gun violence in their states, reminding them of what he called a “hard truth.”

“Here’s a hard truth,” he said. “We probably lost even more Americans than that to guns this weekend alone.”

Obama made his remarks before taking questions from members of the National Governors Association, citing the weekend shooting in Kalamazoo, Michigan as the latest sign of gun violence.

He also reminded governors of his executive actions on gun control earlier this year that he says he hoped would help stop gun violence.

“Clearly we’re going to need to do more if we’re going to keep innocent Americans safe,” he said. “I’ve got to assume that all of you are just as tired as I am of seeing this stuff happen in our states.”

He called for governors to join him in a “common sense” manner on the stopping gun violence without the “ideological rhetoric” from critics regarding the Second Amendment right to own a gun.
