During a February 15 campaign stop in Denver, gun control proponent Gabby Giffords called Hillary Clinton “courageous” and assured would-be caucus voters that Clinton will fight for gun control by “[standing] up to the gun lobby.”
According to ABC 7, Giffords said, “Hillary is tough, Hillary is courageous. She will fight to make our families safer. In the White House she will stand up to the gun lobby. That’s why I’m voting for Hillary.”
She was joined by her husband, Mark Kelly, who was also in Denver to support Clinton’s candidacy.
Giffords and her husband emerged as gun control proponents — and especially proponents of background checks — after Giffords was shot in January 2011 by a man who passed a background check to acquire his handgun. They have spoken in Washington D.C. and to state legislatures around the country since that time, seeking to require every would-be gun owner to pass the same background check Giffords’s attacker passed.
Clinton supports this effort via her push for universal background checks — the same checks that are in place in California, and which San Bernardino attacker Syed Farook passed to acquire the handguns he and Tashfeen Malik used in their December 2 attack.
