Kansas City veteran Eton Gilmore will receive a proper military funeral, thanks to his friend Maryannah Mosley.
Gimore passed away two weeks ago, but Mosley grew concerned when no one claimed his body at the city morgue.
“We were really getting scared. Nobody has come forward for him,” a morgue worker told Mosley.
Gilmore served during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart. Afterwards, he returned home and found a job as a taxi driver. But he became homeless and sought shelter in abandoned houses. Mosley, also a disabled Vietnam veteran, would visit and bring him coffee.
Mosley moved him to a funeral home, but he did not have the money to bury him. FOX 4 connected her with the Department of Veterans Affairs, which promised to pay for his funeral.
“He deserves, number one, a proper burial and the military to acknowledge his service and that would probably make him very happy,” said Mosley.
Gilmore will be buried at the Leavenworth National Cemetery on Thursday. The public is welcome to attend the ceremony.
