State Rep Pushing ‘Nullification’ of Obama’s Executive Gun Controls In Ohio

Ohio state representative Nino Vitale (R-Urbana) is pushing legislation to nullify the enforcement of President Obama’s executive gun controls within the state.

Vitale’s legislation–the “Ohio Federal Gun Law Nullification Act”–prohibits “enforcement of federal gun laws and executive orders relating to all firearms in the state.”

According to the Dayton Daily News, Vitale points to Obama’s January 5 executive gun controls as an example of federal overreach from which Ohioans should be shielded. He is “a member of the National Rifle Association and a concealed-carry instructor, and [argues] the U.S. Constitution doesn’t give the federal government the power to determine gun laws in the states.”

He said, “The main reason for [the legislation] is I feel like the federal government is just out of control. I think we’re a union of states. We’re not supposed to be a regime controlled by one person or even a small group of people.”

Vitale also spoke pragmatically, saying another problem with Obama’s gun control is that “it doesn’t really do anything to curb crime in any way.” Rather, it puts more constraints on the freedom of law-abiding citizens.

Vitale’s push comes on the heels of Kentucky state representative Kenny Imes’ (R-Murray) legislation declaring Obama’s executive gun controls “null and void” in The Bluegrass State. On January 26, Imes spoke to Breitbart News about his legislation–HB 236–saying:

Obama’s executive actions obviously represent an overreach of the federal government–regarding our Second Amendment rights–and it’s just totally insane to even be pushing this. The Second Amendment is very plain. I think anyone can understand it.

Quit frankly, I look at HB 236 as a nullification piece. If nothing else, Kentucky can be sanctuary state for gun rights, where federal violations of the Second Amendment are simply not enforced.

I think it’s time that the citizens of the United States stand up and this is my part in Kentucky trying to stand for the rights of Kentuckians.
