DES MOINES, IOWA— Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said Monday that Iowans sent a clear message tonight to the Washington establishment: they “cannot keep the people down.”

“They cannot keep the people down,” Cruz said in his victory speech. “And tonight is a testament to the peoples commitment to their yearnings to get back” to Judeo-Christian values and the free market, he declared.

“From day one this campaign has been a movement for millions of Americans across the country,” Cruz said. “When the Washington lobbyists settled for other candidates in the race…nationwide, over 800,000 contributions poured into tedcruz.org as courageous conservatives said ‘Yes, we can.'”

Cruz said that the average contribution to his campaign has been $67, adding that, “that is the power of the grassroots.”

“The Republican nominee and president of the United States will not be chosen by the media, will not be chosen by the Washington establishment, will not be chosen by the lobbyists,” Cruz said.

The next President of the United States will be chosen by, “we the people, the American people,” Cruz added.
