Georgia state representatives Rick Jasperse (R-Jasper) and Mandi Ballinger (R-Canton) have introduced legislation that will allow concealed carry permit holders to carry guns on college campuses for self-defense.
Jasperse views the legislation—House Bill 859—as a way to bolster the Second Amendment rights that have been burdened by the weight of many restrictions. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Jasperse said, “Our position on it is pretty clear. We are restoring rights to Georgians.”
HB 859 “already has dozens of co-sponsors.” One of whom, Rep. John Meadows (R-Calhoun), is chairman of the committee that decides which bills get a vote on the House floor.
The push for concealed carry on campuses in Georgia comes as South Carolina state Rep. Phillip Lowe (R-Florence) is pushing legislation to allow teachers with concealed-carry permits to be armed for self-defense on campuses.
