Mitch McConnell: No ‘Fearmongering’ On Syrian Refugee Bill

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says that the debate over Syrian refugees should be based on facts rather than “fearmongering.”

Speaking on the Senate floor, McConnell, R-Ky., urged his colleagues to vote Wednesday to move ahead on a House-passed bill that would require new FBI background checks and individual sign-offs from three high-ranking federal officials before any refugee from Syria or Iraq could come to the United States.

The issue of Syrian refugees has become a major issue in the 2016 election, with Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump calling for a temporary ban on all Muslims entering into the United States.

Presidential candidates Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) are expected to leave the campaign trail and return to Washington for the important vote.

President Obama has threatened to veto the bill. Obama went after Republicans by saying, “apparently, they’re scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America.”
