Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump predicts the Patriots will return to the Super Bowl, on the shoulders of their star quarterback Tom Brady.
“Tom’s my friend, but he’s an amazing athlete and an amazing champ,” Trump said during an interview with radio host Howie Carr earlier this week.
Trump said he always wanted Brady on his golf team in tournaments – recalling a time when the quarterback sank a 15 foot putt on the last hole.
He also praised the Patriot’s coach Bill Belichick, calling him a “great winner.”
“You got the best coach, you have the best quarterback, you have just a fabulous guy in Bob Kraft who is a friend of mine,” he said. “I think you got a good combination.”
“I think Tom goes back, and Tom’s a winner. A great guy … I think Tom’s going to do great,” he said, predicting another Patriots appearance at the Super Bowl.
The New England Patriots take on the Kansas City Chiefs tonight in the NFL playoffs.
Trump has a great relationship with Tom Brady who has been spotted with a “Make America Great Again” hat in his locker.
When asked about the hat, Brady said that he considered Trump a friend who was doing amazing things for the Republican party.
“I mean, look, I’ve known him for a long time. He’s been a fun guy that I’ve had a lot of time around,” he told WEEI in September. “The fact that he’s running has obviously led to a lot of stories and debates and ratings were huge for all those Republican debates and so forth.”
In an interview on Boston radio station WEEI in December, Brady said that he supported Trump as a friend, but denied that he was giving the billionaire an endorsement.
“Can I just stay out of this debate?” Brady said. “Donald is a good friend of mine. I have known him for a long time. I support all my friends. That is what I have to say. He’s a good friend of mine.”
Brady added that he enjoys playing golf with Trump and “always enjoyed his company” and commented on the billionaire’s success.
“I think it’s pretty remarkable what he’s achieved in his life,” he said. “You’re going from business, kind of an incredible business man and then a TV star, and then getting into politics. It’s a pretty different career path. I think that is pretty remarkable.”
