Sen. Marco Rubio releases a new ad today defending his record on immigration reform, after taking punches from his opponents in last night’s debate.
“Don’t fall for it. When I’m president, there will be no amnesty,” Rubio says in the ad. “I’ll cancel Obama’s unconstitutional executive orders; cut sanctuary city funding; and deport criminal aliens.”
But Rubio fails to mention in the ad that he still supports conditional citizenship for illegal immigrants, and even campaigns on the idea.
“After 10 years on the work permit, I personally am open to — after the 10 years have expired — to allowing people to apply for a green card, just through the normal process that anyone else would use,” he said in a November interview with National Public Radio. “That is not a majority position in my party, and it’s not going to be easy to do, but I personally am open to it. … If you add up the years, it is a lot of years before someone who is here illegally now could become a citizen.”
His new ad vows to support border security and increased scrutiny for immigrants coming to the United States.
“If we aren’t 100 percent sure who you are and why you’re coming to America, you’re not getting in,” Rubio says.
