NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina — GOP presidential candidate former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee commented on the recent debate over whether or not Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is considered a “natural born” citizen and therefore elligible to be President of the United States.
Huckabee said that many constitutional scholars have given “very, very compelling and convincing” arguments suggesting it could be a problem for Cruz.
“It was never a concern of mine until I started reading the opinions of many constitutional law scholars who gave a very, very compelling and convining legal case that this is problematic,” Huckabee said to reporters after the GOP primary debate in Charleston, South Carolina.
“I’m not a lawyer, I can’t tell you. But the one thing I can absolutely give you with assurance, I was born in Hope, Arkansas and I can prove it and I’ll promise you the country has already established that you can be president if you were born in Hope, Arkansas. I just say, ‘Let’s give Hope one more chance,” Huckabee joked, referencing former President Bill Clinton, who was also born in Hope, Arkansas.
The debate over whether or not Cruz is a “natural born” citizen began when GOP frontrunner Donald Trump said it could be a “very precarious” issue if Cruz were the GOP nominee, during an interview with the Washington Post.
