On January 12, Hillary Clinton released an ad in which she outlined President Obama’s gun control aspirations and suggested a time for choosing: either stand with Obama or stand with the gun lobby.
Clinton makes clear her choice has already been made. She stands with Obama.
During the ad, Clinton says, “President Obama wants to make universal background checks the law of the land. And he wants to make sure gun manufacturers can finally be held accountable when their guns are used to kill our children.”
She adds, “It’s time to pick a side.” Either you stand with Obama or you stand with the gun lobby. Clinton says she stands with Obama:
Universal background checks are already the law of the land in California. And while they were impotent to prevent the December 2 San Bernardino shooting that killed 14 people, they opened the door for firearm registration and, now, firearm confiscation laws that are on the books in California.
Universal background checks are also the law of the land in Colorado, where they proved impotent to stop the November 27 high-profile shooting at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood. During an interview on CNN’s State of the Union about the Planned Parenthood shooting, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D) sidestepped the failure of universal background checks and, instead, pushed for a discussion about what could be accomplished with more gun control.
The lesson: Universal background checks are not pushed because they are a successful tool to fight crime. Rather, they are pushed because they open the door to a myriad of other gun controls that the left wants to pass–including confiscatory laws.
