National Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is gaining ground in the Iowa caucus against Ted Cruz as establishment wunderkind Marco Rubio fails to pick up any steam.
A Fox News poll released Friday shows Cruz leading the pack with 27 percent support in the Hawkeye State, followed closely by Donald Trump with 23 percent.
Rubio, whose recent campaign trip to Iowa was marked by scandal involving his behind-closed-doors comments on the NSA’s spying on Israel, is stuck in the mud. Rubio counts 15 percent support, which puts him a full 12 points behind Cruz.
Ben Carson has fallen to 9 percent, with Jeb Bush at 7 percent, and Rand Paul, who aims to register college kids as new voters, still picking up a noteworthy 5 percent among likely Republican caucus-goers.
The poll sampled “504 likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers,” according to Fox News. The interviews that comprise the poll were conducted January 4-7. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.
