In the course of announcing numerous new executive gun controls on January 5, President Obama said, “I believe in the Second Amendment.” He even said he believes the Second Amendment “guarantees a right to bear arms.”

But these declarations of belief in the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms are challenged and undone by the fact that this very same president has heaped praise upon countries that availed themselves of confiscatory policies to get rid of guns altogether.

In fact, Obama’s praise of confiscation has been so clear that it makes it appear that his pro-Second Amendment statements were just inserted into his speech as a means of muting those who were ready to counter his gun violence claims with facts and evidence.

For example, consider Obama’s June 2014 comments on CNN, in which he lambasted American society as “this society” which “has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do unbelievable damage.” He said America is “the only developed country on earth where this happens,” and added, “There’s no advanced, developed country on earth that would put up with this.”

And on October 3–two days after the heinous firearm-based attack in Umpqua Community College’s gun free zone–Obama said:

We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of ours, allies of ours — Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours.  So we know there are ways to prevent it.

And that was not the first time Obama had pointed to confiscatory laws as the way “to prevent” high profile attacks. Following the June 17, 2015, attack on church-goers at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, The Guardian quoted Obama saying, “When Australia had a mass killing – I think it was in Tasmania – about 25 years ago, it was just so shocking the entire country said ‘well we’re going to completely change our gun laws’, and they did. And it hasn’t happened since.”

So we have high praise for confiscatory laws and outright frustration over the fact that Americans are still armed, but Obama assures us he is pro-Second Amendment.
