On December 20 President Obama politicized the heroic sacrifice of Zaevion Dobson by suggesting Dobson’s decision to use his own body to shield three girls from gunfire ought to be an impetus for Congress to pass more gun control for law-abiding citizens.
15-year-old Dobson covered the three girls in what police describe as a gang-related shooting in Knoxville, Tennessee, on December 17.
According to WATE, Dobson was with “a crowd of kids preparing to celebrate the holidays” when “three males with possible ties to a gang” drove by and opened fire. Dobson heroically “jumped on top of three girls to shield them from the bullets.” He was killed, but the girls survived.
Knoxville Police Department Chief David Rausch said that 23-year-old Brandon Perry, “along with several additional males, drove to the Lonsdale area and randomly fired multiple times into a crowd on Badgett Drive.” It was there that “Zaevion Dobson…was struck and killed after he had jumped on top of three girls to shield them from the shooters.”
Brandon Perry was later shot, and died as result of his wounds. NBC News reports that a second suspect, 20-year-old Christopher D. Bassett, was apprehended and “charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and violation of probation, and faces additional charges as the investigation unfolds.” It should be noted that Bassett’s felony conviction means he faced 100 percent gun control. He was not allowed to own or even possess a firearm.
On December 20 Obama responded to the alleged gang-related shooting by turning Zaveion Dobson’s selflessness into a call for more gun control. Obama tweeted, “Zaevion Dobson died saving three friends from getting shot. He was a hero at 15. What’s our excuse for not acting?”
