On Tuesday, San Bernardino Valley College will remain closed, even though a bomb threat that forced the evacuation of the school on Monday was later deemed a hoax.
At roughly 5:30 p.m. Monday, the college tweeted a message from Pierre Galvez, chief of police: “There is a threat to San Bernardino Valley College campus. Please leave the campus immediately.”
The athletics department stated online that the evacuation was due to a bomb threat, according to KTLA 5.
By 6 p.m., the San Bernardino police announced that the threat was a hoax. By 9:15 p.m., the school announced it would stay closed on Tuesday “pending investigation.”
12,000 students attend the college every semester, according to the Los Angeles Times, which quoted Alisa Moore, a spokeswoman for the community college district, asserting, “The investigation of the threat has not concluded that the threat has been eliminated.”
Moore protested a statement from a San Bernardino police officer that the threat was a hoax, stating that the city’s police department “is not involved” and “not a credible source.” She added, “It is a big deal to close a college campus and conflicting statements” do not help.
Finals week for the students started Saturday; the tests were scheduled to continue through the week, according to the college’s website.
