A poll from the Washington Post/ABC shows Donald Trump leading the Republican field with 38 percent.
The poll has Donald Trump in first place with 38 percent among Republicans and right-leaning independents. He is backed by more than 1 in 3 Republicans. In second place is Sen Ted Cruz (R-TX) with 15 percent. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Ben Carson are tied in third place with 12 percent.
Donald Trump has faced backlash for his proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering into the United States, but it appears as though the proposal may have helped him as he currently has his highest margin of support yet. He is currently six points higher than he was was in November.
When Republicans and right-leaning independents were asked who is the strongest leader, 54 percent of them said Trump. When asked who can best shake up Washington, D.C. 51 percent of voters named Trump. The poll also asked voters who has the best chance of winning the general election, and 47 percent of them chose Trump.
However, in a hypothetical match-up between Trump and Clinton, Trump loses to Clinton by 50 percent to 44 percent among registered voters.
The telephone based poll was conducted from December 10 to 13 with a national sample of 1,002 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. The margin of error among the sample of 362 Republican and right-leaning independents is plus or minus six points.
