In a portion of an interview that aired on ABC’s “World News Tonight” with Barbara Walters, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump argued his so-called short-term ban on Muslims entering the United States was the right thing to do and insisted that in the long run the American people would be with him.
Trump explained it was about taking on the ISIS threat and that he had been through a similar backlash once before when he took on the issue of immigration
“I’m the worst thing that ever happened to ISIS,” Trump said. “The people in my party fully understand that — they’re running against me. For the most part, they have no poll numbers. I’m leading by a lot. They get it. They’re trying to get publicity for themselves. You know when I came out against illegal immigration, everybody said the same thing. Two weeks later, everybody was on my side, including the members of my own party.”
Trump went to vow he was not a bigot and said his policy gestures were about “making America great again.”
