Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Live With Thomas Roberts,” Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) said Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the United States is the same kind of “discrimination and hatred,”people like segregationist and former Gov. George Wallace (D-AL) used to “whip up hate and hysteria to elevate his political position.”
Ellison said, “My biggest concern is it does not help us become a safer country. Throwing Americans against each other, ramping up discrimination and hatred, doesn’t make us any safer at all. you know, this is a typical and historic game that’s played by, I don’t know, people like Joe McCarthy, people like George Wallace, even pitchfork Ben Tillman back in the 1890s. Whipping up hate and hysteria to elevate his political position and not really offering anyone any real solutions. That’s my real concern that we would turn us against each other and not be better off as a nation.”
