HOUSTON, Texas – A Texas state Republican Party member is presenting a resolution to Republican Party of Texas officials that could put state secession to a vote by primary voters.
Tanya Robertson, a member of the State Republican Executive Committee for Senate District 11, is promoting the idea and will be presenting her resolution to the resolutions committee in Austin, Texas, on December 4. This 12-member committee will decide if Texas succession dies in this committee or goes to the next step in the process.
Robertson who represents parts of Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties, told a diminishing local paper that secession should be put before the voters because of dissatisfaction with Washington D.C. representatives and excessive federal government spending.
Texas Republican State Party Chairman Tom Mechler was reported to say that he did not believe there was support within the State Republican Executive Committee to approve Robertson’s resolution.
The Republican Party SREC committeewoman’s resolution, even if signed off by Texas state party officials, would be a non-binding vote and said not to compel the state to secede.
As of the time of publication, Robertson did not answer a query from Breitbart Texas as to whether she had researched whether secession would be legal, or whether U.S. Supreme Court precedent has addressed the issue of state independence. She was also asked whether she had researched what the fallout would be of voters approving the issue, even assuming the issue got to the voters.
