On Tuesday’s “New Day” on CNN, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told show co-host Alisyn Camerota that if he had said some of the things current Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump had said during his 2008 bid, he would have been thrown out of the race.
According to Giuliani, that stems from a double standard possibly attributed to his role as an entertainer.
“He is judged by a different standard,” Giuliani said. “Maybe it’s because of his background on ‘The Apprentice’ as an entertainer and the fact that he’s been a big personality. He almost like speaks in headlines, gets your attention and then a lot of the points he makes are very substantive. But then the headline turns out to be exaggerated.”
“For example – from the very beginning, ‘Most of the people coming over are rapists, murders and killers.’ Wrong. Most of the people coming over are good people. In between those good people, there are rapist, murders and killers.”
Overall, Giuliani said Trump’s presence in the race was a positive.
“I think he’s helping the other candidates get a lot more attention than they otherwise would get,” Giuliani added.
