Michael van der Galien, editor-in-chief of De Dagelijkse Standaard (The Daily Standard) talked about Turkey and the European Union with host Stephen K. Bannon today on Sirius XM’s Breitbart News Daily.
They discussed the most recent deal between the European Union and Turkey: E.U. Offers Turkey 3 Billion Euros to Stem Migrant Flow. Below the headlines, the deal takes on a much different look. It opens up “the possibility of sharply increasing the number of refugees who could be resettled to Europe from refugee camps in Turkey and elsewhere, giving more migrants a legal path to the Continent”.
It also looks at fast tracking Turkey’s entry into the EU, which would, in effect, remove much of any border at all.
Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Ms. Merkel said that Europe had many reasons to work closely with Turkey but that the essential part of the negotiations was the need to “replace illegal migration with legal migration.” Her statement reflects a hope that the unruly flow of asylum seekers — a mix of refugees fleeing war and economic migrants seeking a better life — can be brought under control before the people reach Europe.
In the end, van der Galien, like others, thinks the deal will only make things worse.
