A homeowner opened fire on a group of three men accused of entering his home on November 17 under the guise of being police officers. The homeowner was able to shoot one of the three multiple times and strike another at least once.
The incident occurred “around 1 a.m” outside of Reading, Pennsylvania, and according to 69 WFMZ, documents filed in court say that four men “were driving around in a wooded area outside Reading early Tuesday morning when they conspired to pretend they were the police and rob the residents of a home on Mill Road in Oley Township.” Three of the men–Edward Martinez, Erick Green, and Cheyene Tavarez–entered the home, while the fourth–Brandon Smith–waited in the car.
The three men, two of whom were armed, allegedly “forced their way” into the home. They then reportedly “went upstairs and confronted the sleeping residents, one of whom retrieved his own handgun from a nightstand next to the bed and shot Martinez and Tavarez.” All three fled in the face of gunfire, climbed into the waiting car, and drove “to Penn State Health St. Joseph on Route 183 in Bern Township.”
Martinez was treated and released, and Tavarez was hospitalized for multiple gunshot wounds.
Pennsylvania State Police said Green and Martinez “were charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, theft, and related offenses.” Smith, the alleged getaway driver, “was charged with aggravated assault, attempted burglary, conspiracy to commit robbery, and related offenses.”
The fourth suspect, Tavarez, faced charges for a parole violation above and beyond charges related to the home invasion itself. Police said he dropped a gun after being shot, and that gun “was reported to have been stolen in Reading.”
