After Grammy award-winning British singer-songwriter Adele gave former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin credit for helping to jumpstart her music career, Palin sent a clever “thank you” note in reply.
During a recent interview for a BBC One special, Adele said Palin inadvertently helped catapult her to Grammy contention and put her album 19 to No. 1 on iTunes.
Adele’s mainstream breakthrough occurred after the pair ended up doing Saturday Night Live together in 2008.
Palin was scheduled to appear on the comedy sketch show in Oct. 2008, the week after Adele was set to perform as the show’s music guest. Due to a scheduling conflict, Palin was forced to reschedule, and ended up appearing on the episode with Adele.
“Something came up in the campaign,” Adele told the BBC. “She came and did SNL the week I was doing it.”
The episode would go on to become one of the highest-rated SNL episodes ever, and the British singer now gives full credit to the former Vice Presidential candidate for helping carve her path to superstardom in the U.S.
Adele said the show was “two weeks before the Grammy ballot, which is when people decide what songs they want to maybe nominate, so, like, literally the stars aligned for me.”
“The album shot to number one on iTunes and I was nominated for a Grammy, and then I won one! It was a joke! It was a joke. All thanks to Sarah Palin!” said Adele.
After hearing Adele’s comments, Palin sent the singer a signed copy of her new book, Sweet Freedom: A Devotional.
Using song titles from some of Adele’s biggest hits, Palin wrote, “Rumor Has It you recently threw me some credit for your amazing success – very kind coming from Someone Like You! Congrats on motherhood. Keep Setting Fire to the Rain. Love, your fan… Sarah Palin”
Adele released her newest album 25 last Friday. It has already broken the record for most albums sold in a week, selling 2.43 million units to date.
