Charlie Cook: ‘Expertise and Experience’ a Disqualifier in GOP

In an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday, Charlie Cook, editor of the Cook Political Report, suggested that experience has become a disqualifier in Republican Party politics.

According to Cook, the rise of Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina is evidence this phenomenon is a real thing.

“Well, we’ve gotten to a point where experience and expertise has gone from being a good quality to an overrated commodity to now a disqualifier,” Cook said. “I would point to the three outsiders. Trump, Carson, Fiorina. None of them have ever held public office whatsoever. But if you at least look at Fiorina, this is someone who has actually studied these issues, who has mastered them and who is absolutely 100 percent converse in these things. In a sharp contrast with Carson and Trump who sort of is a millimeter deep. It is striking to me. I don’t think it hurts them within their individual basis, but it does keep them from growing beyond that point.”
