Donald Trump is gearing up for a big performance this weekend on Saturday Night Live, and in a new interview, the Republican presidential candidate says he vetoed “risqué” skits so as not to offend the sensibilities of Iowa voters, who will take to the polls in the first-in-the-nation caucuses in February.
Trump is currently holding on to a slim lead in Iowa, at 25% to Dr. Ben Carson’s 23%, according to the latest CNN/ORC poll. In an interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly set to air later this afternoon, Trump said he’d like to keep that lead.
“They have all these writers,” Trump told O’Reilly. “They have 100 writers. I walk into the room, there are 100; and they’re all about 17 years old, okay? They’re all young and all up in your face. But they come up with many, many skits; and you pick the ones you think you like.”
“There were a couple that were too risqué,” he added. “Because, you know, the poll just came down — I’m leading in Iowa; I want to stay leading in Iowa.”
Trump’s SNL appearance has come under heavy fire from Hispanic advocacy and media groups, as well as from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who have lobbied NBC to rescind its invitation to Trump.
However, SNL has pushed ahead with its Trump-hosted episode and released a new promo for it on Friday.
