In the lead-up to President Obama’s October 27 speech to police chiefs gathered in Chicago, an unnamed Obama adviser says the President will emphasize national standards for gun laws.
Obama is expected to claim that the high rate of gun crime in Chicago is not wholly Chicago’s fault, but is also the result of the lax gun laws in states around Illinois and Chicago–particularly Indiana.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Obama adviser said, “It’s the patchwork of laws that doesn’t serve us. People just go to other jurisdictions with looser laws.” And the Times reports that the Chicago Police Department claims “some 60% of the guns associated with crimes in Chicago come from out of state.” They even point to “looser laws” in Mississippi as a contributing factor to Chicago’s violence.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) took this same tact on September 17, when he blamed gun laws in the South for the rise of firearm-related homicides in New York City. The New York Daily News reported that Cuomo said, “As long as you can get a gun from some state down south, put it in a trunk and drive it up, it’s gonna get into this state, and that’s what’s happening.”
This approach–taken by Cuomo and predicted by Obama’s adviser–allows Democrats to overlook the failure of gun control in various cities and states around the country, while simultaneously attempting to justify a federal push to set uniform standards for gun control that everyone has to follow.
