GOP presidential candidate former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is defending Donald Trump after backlash from the media and fellow GOP candidate former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on his comment about 9-11 happening under President George W. Bush.
“I don’t think – from what I read, I didn’t get the implication that he was saying it was Bush’s fault – that he has some personal blame,” Santorum said during a sit down interview Tuesday afternoon, reacting to the back and forth between the Bush and Trump campaigns.
“But if the answer is, are you responsible for things that happen under your watch – yes,” Santorum said. “I mean, I was a senator. I take responsibility.”
“The question is what can we do to learn from that,” Santorum added.
Last Friday, Trump said 9-11 occurred under George W. Bush’s watch during a television interview with Bloomberg.
“I think I’m much more competent than all of them,” Trump said, when asked about American safety if he was President of the United States. “When you talk about George Bush – I mean, say what you want, the World Trade Center came down during his time.”
Following Trump’s statement, Jeb Bush responded on Twitter, defending his brother.
