Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson says that “logic and common sense” make clear it’s time to talk about eliminating gun free zones, not guns.
During an October 20 interview on WPHT’s Dom Giordano Show, Carson discussed the importance of the U.S. Constitution and the avenue to unity it provides for Americans of every race and creed.
Giordano then pointed to the disunity that exists between Republicans and Democrats regarding gun rights, and asked, “Why these battle over the Second Amendment?”
Carson replied:
There shouldn’t be a battle over the 2nd Amendment. I believe that it would be most reasonable to say, yes we see these tragedies that occur with guns and people using them in an inappropriate manner and, obviously, we should be concerned about that, so let’s sit down and let’s talk about reasonable ways to prevent this from happening without infringing on our 2nd Amendment rights. That’s what intelligent people do.
Giordano then pointed out how Democrats recoil when Carson criticizes the practice of forcing people to sit unarmed in gun free zones on school campuses. He asked Carson what it is like to go through that angry backlash from politicians and talking heads who dig in their heels to preserve gun free zones at all costs.
Carson said:
Logic and common sense is something that seems to have escaped many people. In fact, when you look at some of these gun tragedies that have occurred, it’s quite amazing how they seem to occur in the gun free zones. A lot of these shooters are people who are mentally unstable, but they’re not so unstable that they don’t recognize that, if I’m going to kill a lot of people, I need to go to a place where people are not likely to have guns and kill me.
Note this important point from Carson’s answer–Even when the shooter may be “mentally unstable” he is strangely stable enough to know he does not want to carry out his attack in a place where people can shoot back.
