GOP frontrunner Donald Trump says he is more competent than both President George W. Bush and President Obama, noting that the World Trade Center came down during Bush’s watch.
“OK, I think I have a bigger heart than all of them,” Trump said during a television interview with Bloomberg, when asked how Americans can depend on him to keep them safe. “I think I’m much more competent than all of them. When you talk about George Bush – I mean, say what you want, the World Trade Center came down during his time,” Trump stated.
Bloomberg’s Stephanie Ruhle, who was conducting the interview, said, “Hold on! You can’t blame George Bush for that.”
“He was president, OK?” Trump replied. “Blame him or don’t blame him, but he was president. The World Trade Center came down during his reign.”
The reporter had also mentioned the 2012 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
“If you look at Sandy Hook, those people are still begging for help. It’s a disaster, and it’s a disaster all over the place,” Trump said of the incident that happened under Obama. “Government has proven to be a disaster during the Obama administration.”
“What we need is a leader, we don’t have a leader,” Trump said.
Daily Mail’s Political Editor David Martosko noted this is an “unprovoked” attack by Trump against Bush, referencing his statements about the World Trade Center.
Martosko reported:
Freddy Ford, a spokesman for George W. Bush, wasted no time in responding to a question about whether or not the former president would respond to The Donald’s remarks.
“Thanks for checking, but definitely not,” Ford said Friday morning.
A Trump campaign spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
During the interview with Bloomberg, Trump also discussed the Democratic debate, saying frontrunner Hillary Clinton is being pushed farther left by her challenger “maniac” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a self-proclaimed socialist.
