On October 14 gun control proponent Gabby Giffords and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright launched a women-based coalition for gun control.
Giffords and Albright are joined by former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman (R).
Giffords is calling the group the Women’s Coalition for Common Sense, and it is the second gun control group she has launched since Adam Lanza stole guns and used them to attack Sandy Hook Elementary in December 2012. The first gun control group she founded is called Americans for Responsible Solutions.
According to Talk Radio News, Giffords launched the new gun control group by saying, “We can change our laws. We can fight for responsible solutions. Together, we can make women and their families safer.” She added, “We don’t have to agree about everything, but we can agree on this, dangerous people with guns are a threat to women.”
USA Today reported that Giffords’ new group was holding a “Domestic Violence Awareness Summit” on October 14 that was expected to draw “more 100 women.”
The coalition is pushing to redefine “domestic violence” so that it covers individuals who are not married, thereby banning whole new categories of people from gun ownership.
Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly have spent the last three years campaigning to expand background checks so that private gun sales go through a government check just like retail gun sales. On January 8, 2011, Giffords was shot and wounded by Jared Loughner, who acquired his gun by passing a background check at a retail store. Giffords now wants every would-be gun purchaser to pass the same background check that Loughner passed.
