Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was asked if he dropped out of the race for Speaker of the House because of his Benghazi comments, which were politicized by Hillary Clinton. He suggests it did influence his decision.
“Well that wasn’t helpful,” he said with a chuckle, when asked by a reporter if his comments on the Benghazi committee influenced his decision to step out of the race.
”I could have said it much better, but this Benghazi committee was only created for one purpose – to find the truth on behalf of the families for the four dead Americans. I should not be a distraction for that. And, that’s part of the decision as well,” McCarthy stated.
McCarthy previously mentioned the House Select Committee on Benghazi in reference to Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers sinking, giving the Democrats reason to politicize the formation of the Benghazi committee.
The committee is headed by Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) and has been investigating the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi under Clinton’s watch during her time as Secretary of State.
