On October 7, Democrat presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton interrupted her numerous pledges for gun control just long enough to try to discredit the NRA and discourage its membership.
She did this by comparing negotiations with the group to negotiations with Iran and suggesting the group keeps its members worked up in a frenzy by saying “they’re the only thing that’s going to stop the black helicopters from landing in the front yard and people’s guns being seized.”
Clinton made these comments after days of campaigning for expanding background checks, increasing the time allotted for background checks–increasing it from a three day maximum to an indefinite time frame–increasing the amount of regulations on gun shows, increasing the amount of regulations on online gun sales, allowing shooting victims and their families to sue gun makers when criminals misuse guns, and changing the definition of domestic violence so as to broaden it and bar whole new categories of people from gun possession.
She began pushing these specific gun control proposals on October 5, restating them over and over at campaign stops. Moreover, she pledged that she will enact them unilaterally via executive order if elected.
Then, on October 7 she tried to use sarcasm and innuendo to disarm one of the greatest obstacles she’ll face in enacting such controls–namely, the five million member strong NRA.
According to The Hill, Clinton said, “You know, the NRA’s position reminds me of negotiating with the Iranians or the communists.” She claimed, “The NRA tries to keep gun owners — the ones who are members — really upset all the time so they can keep collecting their money, because they tell them they’re the only thing that’s going to stop the black helicopters from landing in the front yard and people’s guns being seized.”
She then added that facing the formidable NRA makes her understand “why the president feels discouraged, because it is discouraging to see the cynicism, the greed, behind this lobbying.”
Ironically, it was less than a week ago that “the president” suggested it may be time to step beyond mere gun control and consider gun confiscation.
