DETROIT (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. John Dingell, the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history, has been hospitalized in Detroit for a heart procedure.

Dingell’s wife, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, released a statement Tuesday saying her 89-year-old husband was admitted to Henry Ford Hospital on Monday for a heart procedure, though she didn’t offer specifics. But she did say her husband was comfortable and “his usual feisty self.”

The Democrat served 59 years in Congress, after being elected in 1955 to fill the House seat vacated by his father. Debbie Dingell was elected to her husband’s Detroit-area seat after he decided to retire last year.

John Dingell also was hospitalized in December, when he spent more than two weeks in a Washington hospital because of a fractured hip.
