A group of conservative Mississippi state lawmakers are urging their congressional delegation in Washington to vote against any continuing resolution that includes funding for Planned Parenthood.
In the letter, initiated by DeSoto County Representative-Elect Dana Criswell (R), the lawmakers demonstrate the persistence of the grassroots conservative base of the Republican Party in fighting to see constitutional principles enacted in Washington.
Addressed to Sen. Thad Cochran, Sen. Roger Wicker, Rep. Gregg Harper, Rep. Steven Palazzo, and Rep. Trent Kelly, the letter states:
It is a moral imperative that Republicans in Congress do everything within their power to investigate these reports and take whatever actions feasible to stop the harvesting of the body parts of babies.
More pressingly, the U.S. House and U.S. Senate must act immediately to fully defund Planned Parenthood. No member of the Mississippi delegation to the U.S. Congress should support any funding resolution or mechanism – an appropriations bill, an omnibus package, a continuing resolution, or otherwise – that contains any funding for Planned Parenthood, including mandatory funding streams.
In light of Speaker Boehner’s apparent persistence in funding Planned Parenthood with U.S. taxpayer funds, we the undersigned call on Mississippi’s Congressional delegation, including Senators Wicker and Cochran, and Representatives Trent Kelly, Gregg Harper, and Stephen Palazzo, to vote NO on any Continuing Resolution that includes funding for Planned Parenthood.
The Republican-led House of Representatives has the “power of the purse” according to the Constitution of the United States. It is our fervent hope that Congress will finally stand up and exercise that power in this matter.
One of the letter’s signers, Representative-Elect Steve Hopkins (R) tells Breitbart News, “For far too long leftist organizations have gone unchecked and this must stop immediately especially in the case of Planned Parenthood.”
“The tide is changing in Mississippi and true conservatives from Jackson County to DeSoto County are taking a stand and vigilantly watching those in office who are supposed to be voting according to the will of the people,” he continued. “The people of Mississippi don’t care about committee assignments or special favors, they care about the Christian values we were raised on and upholding the Constitution; therefore, in light of recent events we call upon our Senators and Representatives to fully defund Planned Parenthood.”
