In one of the more dramatic moments in yesterday’s disastrous testimony of Cecile Richards before the House Oversight Committee, Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) asked Richards to comment on a chart showing how Planned Parenthood breast exams have plummeted at the same time that abortions have increased.
The chart shows that 2006 to 2013, Planned Parenthood cancer screenings dropped from 2,007,371 to 935,573, a drop of more than 50 percent.
The chart also showed that during the same time period abortions performed by Planned Parenthood rose 12 percent from 289,750 to 327,000.
Richards blustered, “You created this slide. I don’t know what it is. This is a slide that’s never been shown to me before. I’m happy to look at it and but it absolutely does not reflect what’s happening at Planned Parenthood.”
Chaffetz responded, “You’re going to deny when we’ve taken these numbers out of your own report. I pulled those numbers directly out of your corporate reports.”
At this point Richards’s lawyer leans in and whispers in her ear and viewers expect that he’s telling her they are her own numbers. Instead, she goes on the attack, “My lawyers are informing me that the source for this is Americans United for Life, an anti-abortion group so I would check your source.”
In fact, the chart was clearly labeled “Source: Planned Parenthood’s Annual Reports”
