On September 24 Daily Mail editor Piers Morgan claimed that Pope Francis used his speech to the U.S. Congress to eviscerate “gun-toting, blood-thirsty…bigots” vying for conservative leadership and suggested the Pope’s approach shows Democrats the way to defeat Republicans in coming elections.
Morgan seized on the timing of the Pope’s speech, writing, “As the Republican presidential nominee race has accelerated, so too has the highly-charged inflammatory rhetoric of many of the candidates on hot-button issues. Donald Trump’s whacked Mexicans, Ben Carson’s whacked Muslims, Mike Huckabee’s whacked gays, and Ted Cruz has whacked anyone he can think of.”
Morgan then suggested that Pope Francis interjected “fairness and humility” in the process and claimed that the Pope’s message for Republicans seeking a presidential candidate is that “America doesn’t have to be a country driven by gun-toting, blood-thirsty, planet-destroying bigots.”
Morgan wants to see Democrats follow in the Pope’s footsteps via their criticism of Republicans. He wrote, “Democrats who can should heed [Pope Francis’s] blisteringly effective dismantling of the more unpalatable conservative views today and realise that’s the way to attack them.”
Gun control proponent Gabby Giffords was quick to take Pope Francis’s approach and meld it with her insatiable desire that all gun guyers be forced to pass the same background check her attacker–Jared Loughner–passed to get his gun. Presenting gun control in the religious language, Giffords tweeted, “Inspired by [Pope Francis], let all Americans engage in a politics that sees the passage of just legislation that may bring us closer to grace.”
