Sen. Marco Rubio has mostly tried to stay out of the political fray consuming the Republican party over the popularity of Donald Trump, but it appears that the Florida senator couldn’t resist taking some shots at the billionaire candidate in a recent interview.
“First of all, he takes shots at everybody that gets anywhere close to him, in terms of a poll, or anytime he hits a rough spot that’s what he does,” Rubio said during a conversation on Kentucky Sports Radio, obtained by BuzzFeed.
Rubio pointed out that Trump was “a very touchy and insecure guy” who had a “really bad debate performance” in the CNN debate last week.
Rubio’s polls have risen since the last debate, but he still is far behind Donald Trump’s first-place showing.
The latest Fox News poll shows Rubio at fourth place with only nine percent support, while Trump is at 26 percent.
Trump specifically singled out Rubio in the debate, attacking his Senate attendance record, after Rubio questioned his foreign policy readiness. On Tuesday, Trump referred to him as “Senator Marco ‘amnesty’ Rubio” on Twitter.
“He’s overly ambitious, too young — and I have better hair than he does, right?” Trump asked a political audience in South Carolina. “I’ve never seen a young guy sweat that much. He’s drinking water, water, water. I never saw anything like this with him with the water.”
Rubio suggested that Trump was already fading out of the political conversation.
“I think he’s kind of been exposed a little bit over the last seven days, and he’s a very touchy and insecure guy and so that’s how he reacts, and people can see through it,” Rubio said.
