Chicago Teacher Makes Epileptic Boy Wear Trash bag

An epileptic, non-verbal five-year-old boy in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) was forced to wear a trash bag by his teacher that she used as a poncho.

Myesha Terry told WGN that she visited her son Lloyd’s classroom at Wentworth Elementary and found him wearing the trash bag, isolated from the other students. When she confronted the teacher, the teacher said she made Lloyd wear the trash bag because of the saliva that drips, getting his shirt wet.

Myesha Terry told WGN, “My heart broke,” noting, “He is the only child that was isolated.” Terry added that the teacher’s actions were dangerous and disrespectful. But the teacher repeated the action the very next day.

Terry reported the situation to the principal, Dina L. Everage, and contacted CPS, but there has been no response. After WGN contacted CPS, the district issued a statement reading, “We work to ensure all students are comfortable in their learning environment. This incident is inexcusable and CPS has launched an investigation. We will take all appropriate actions to ensure this issue is resolved and prevented from happening again.”
