Secret Service Director Apologizes for Cancer Vigil Disruption

WASHINGTON — Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy apologized Monday to an organizer of a child cancer vigil that was disrupted Saturday evening at a park near the White House because of security operations.

Mike Gillette, an advocate for CureFest for Childhood Cancer, said Clancy expressed his regrets for the incident in which a group of more than 700 people was removed from Lafayette Square just before the start of a candlelight gathering aimed at raising awareness for child victims of cancer.

“He was very open and honest, saying that they (Secret Service) made a mistake,” Gillette said. “We never thought there was any malice intended. We’re just a bunch of families who care about kids with cancer.”
